How does fill weight impact the warmth of a comforter?
Scale next to white duvet next to pile of down with blue background

Fill Weight refers to the amount of fill in a comforter, measured in ounces. To make a comforter warmer, we increase the fill weight by adding ounces of fill.

Collection Warmth Rating Size Dimensions Fill Weight Loft
White Goose Down Summer Weight Queen 88" x 90" 25 oz 575
White Goose Down Regular Weight Queen 88" x 90" 30 oz 575

For example, a Queen Summer Weight White Goose Down Duvet contains 25 oz of fill.
A Queen Regular Weight White Goose Down Duvet contains 30 oz of fill.
The Regular Weight comforter is warmer, as it contains 5 more ounces of fill.

How does loft fit into the picture?

Loft (also known as Fill Power) refers to the fluffiness of down, or how many cubic inches 1 ounce of down will fill. The higher the loft value, the fluffier and more insulating each ounce of down will be. Because higher loft down is warmer per ounce, we require fewer ounces of that down to achieve the desired level of warmth. (Note that loft is a measure used for down, not feather or polyester).

Collection Warmth Rating Size Dimensions Fill Weight Loft
White Goose Down Regular Weight Queen 88" x 90" 30 oz 575
Hutterite Goose Down Regular Weight Queen 88" x 90" 25 oz 700

Here we have 2 Regular Weight Comforters. Because they share the same warmth rating, they are equally warm.
A Queen Regular Weight White Goose Down Duvet contains 30 oz of 575 loft down.
A Queen Regular Weight Hutterite Goose Down Duvet contains 25 oz of 700 loft down.
Because the 700 loft down has better insulating properties, fewer ounces are required to make a Regular Weight Comforter.

Finding a comforter that won’t keep you too warm or leave you shivering at night can seem like a daunting task, but I hope I’ve been able to shed some light on the matter! Now, if you don’t mind me, I’m going to snuggle up and take a nap. All this comforter talk has me a little sleepy!

Hello, what is the TOG of 700 Hutterite goose down regular weight comforter and what is it for all-season? Also, is the TOG respectively the same on the 650 goose down regular and all-season.

Ieva

Hi there, If two duvets have the same warmth rating, they are the same warmth level! All of our duvets in Regular Weight are the same warmth level - moderately warm for moderate room temperatures of about 19-21C or warmer sleepers. Regular Weight is around 8-10 tog. All Season Weight duvets are all the same warmth level - quite warm, for cooler room temps of about 16-18C. All Season Weight is about 10-12 tog. (This is based on our understanding of how tog ratings feel and perform, but we haven't had our duvets lab tested for tog, as it's not as commonly used in Canada). We hope to do this soon and be able to publish the results!)

Note that loft is not an indicator of the warmth level of a duvet - it's an indicator of the warmth and insulating properties of the down itself. Any loft of down can be used to create a duvet of any warmth level. It takes less higher loft down and more lower loft down to achieve the desired warmth level. As such, you'll find that if 2 duvets are the same warmth level, the higher loft duvet will be lighter weight.

I’m in Ottawa, visiting family. I’m from Calgary and noticed my sister doesn’t have a duvet. I need to get her Alberta best products. How come I never seen you at the Calgary crossroads market??

David

Hi David, Thank you for thinking of us! I’m afraid we don’t sell at any physical stores or locations – only online. The good news is we offer free shipping and free returns to Alberta! :)

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Hi there – I just received two king sized white goose down comforters to compare and I’ll keep one. I got yours, and the Macy’s Hotel Collection (made in China for the Phoenix Down Corporation in New Jersey it says). Both are of the approximate same warmth ratings (essentially lighter weight). Yours is the purple Hutterite regular weight (still means lighter weight if apples to apples) and theirs is called light weight I believe. Theirs says 75% down because legally it has to be at least 75% to be able to be called down, of course, and yours it seems has superior white goose down…probably a higher percentage of whole white goose down clusters.

I’m shocked by the difference in size and weight! Theirs has a thick, almost starchy material covering theirs (500 thread count), with a decorative pattern on it, so heavy that for now anyway it sort of smashes down their down and is much bulkier and heavier to carry. I’m sure it will eventually soften as well as puff up at least a little as most do once used regularly. Their tag says 36oz of filling material, even though it’s considered their light weight one and yours has 29oz written on the bag’s cardboard insert for fill weight (neither has been fully taken out of their bags yet). But other than that they are about the same dimensions in overall inches as well as per square’s size. I’m sure yours is so dramatically lighter because the down will be loftier once it’s shaken out and puffs out a bit (and may also be warmer, I don’t know) due to higher quality down. Already – in an hour since I opened up a corner square each – yours seems ever so slightly puffier. The fabric is nice and smooth and cool to the touch thank goodness. :) I might want it a hair warmer but after the duvet is on (er, the protective cover) it will probably be the perfect warmth. Our bedroom is about 65 degrees (18.3 c) in the winter so right on the cusp there.

Here’s what confuses me. They don’t say what kind of box stitching they used – whether sewn through or baffle boxing, so I assume sewn through because it’s the inferior method. And why not advertise that it’s baffle boxing if indeed it is. And yet, yours says baffle boxing but looks and feels identical to theirs where the boxes are sewn together internally (not including the outer edges). There’s a barely-felt extra piece there it seems, in both cases, which can be felt, like a thin strip. Can this really be the illustrious baffling I’ve read so much about? It seems you’re either both using baffle boxing or neither is, since I can feel that thin strip inside both where the squares meet up inside. Are you certain yours is made with baffle boxing and isn’t just sewn through? I want to make sure we don’t have a terminology difference between the US and Canada.😆 E.g. here most refer to the cover of the insert as the duvet and the insert as comforter.

Lastly, approximately what is the percentage of white goose down clusters in yours Hutterite medium weight duvet?

Sorry this was so long and thank you!

Marya

Hi Marya, We’re certain they are baffle box construction! You can see for yourself by pinching the seam between 2 fingers on one side of the duvet and doing the same on the other side of the duvet and pulling apart. You’ll see that there are 2 seams that pull apart, separated by a small vertical piece of material on the inside. 700 loft down will usually test at about 85%-90% down cluster.

Canadian Down & Feather Company

I ordered an 850 loft Duvet on October 12 2023 from your website. I received my order. However I am not impressed with the quality. This was a $900 CA Duvet, the most I’ve ever invested on a blanket. But the price didn’t bother me because what I was getting was supposed to be an all season duvet with 850 loft meant to keep us warm for the winter season.
I was originally surprised upon receiving it how thin the duvet was even after we puffed it out and let it sit overnight. Even with wearing pajamas and having our room temperature at night at 18 degrees celsius both me and my partner are still cold. We have to wear socks and long sleeve shirts to stay warm. So thr bottom line is we are extremely dissatisfied at the moment. Is it possible we did not actually receive an 850 loft Duvet product? Though the package does say 850 loft on it.
Thank you for your time,

Simon Harris

Hi Simon, I’m so sorry to hear that. Of course, the perception of warmth is highly subjective, and body temperatures and personal preferences vary. Although I must say that most people find this duvet very insulating, even as low as 16C! It's important to note that loft is not the measure of the warmth of a duvet. Any loft of down can be used to create duvets of any warmth level. We do believe that you received the 850 loft, but of course, if there's been a mistake, please send over some photos of what you received so we can investigate. Also note that lightness is the hallmark of a high loft, high quality duvet! High loft down is extremely warm per ounce, and therefore, just a little bit of fill creates a lot of warmth! You'll find that the higher the loft, the lower the fill weight of the duvet!

You may be better suited with one of our Winter Weight duvets, which are warmer than the All Season you purchased. You can find the two duvets that come in Winter Weight on our Product Comparison Chart.

If you believe your duvet was underfilled or mis-filled, it would qualify for replacement or repair under warranty.

We can also add more fill to the duvet for you to make it more suitable!

We hope to hear from you soon so we can pursue one of these solutions.

Canadian Down & Feather Company

My 30 oz duvet is by far the best quality duvet we have ever had. Incredibly soft, quiet . I have not slept better. Highly recommend this product!

Elizabeth

any smaller sizes like twin size?

meah wojno

Hi Meah, All of our duvets come in Twin size!

Canadian Down & Feather Company

I’m looking for a king duvet. The last one we had we had extra fill put in it as we loved it . the fluffiest duvet we can possibly get which one would you recommend?

Dianne Dale

Hi Dianne, The fluffiest duvets we offer are our Winter Weight duvets. There are 2 duvets that come in Winter Weight – 650 Loft White Goose Down Duvet and White Goose Down Duvet. (Check the product comparison chart for which duvets come in which weights). Fluffiness and warmth go hand in hand! Winter Weight duvets are very fluffy but also very warm – too warm for most people! If the fluffy, full appearance is most important to you, Winter is a great choice. But most people need something more functional and opt for a lower weight accordingly.

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Do your duvets come with tabs on the ends, I wanted to purchase a duvet cover from you with the zippers on three sides, right now I don’t use a cover , although I have three, I find it’s to difficult to get the duvet inside with arthritis in hands. Thank you

Linda Robertson

Hi Linda, Our duvets have loops in all 4 corners. The duvet covers have ribbons in all 4 corners that go through the loops and snap closed to keep the duvet from shifting in the cover. We designed these covers to be easier to put on, so I do hope you get to try it, and hopefully you have a better experience!!

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Hello – if we purchase one of your duvets from another source IE: TSC/Amazon etc….is the warranty still valid through your company? Also I’m trying to decide which duvet. I like a full fluffy duvet for cold winter nights. What would you suggest.

Thanks

Chérie

Hi Cherie, Yes, if you purchase from any of the retailers we deal with directly, we do honour the warranty, as the product is coming directly from us. TSC and Amazon are our direct partners! If you’re buying on Amazon, please make sure we are the seller and not another 3rd party! If you have any questions about which retailers we supply to, our customer service team will be happy to advise. If you find our products at an auction house, liquidation store, facebook marketplace, or anything like that, we can’t warranty the product, as we don’t know where it came from, whether it’s been used, how it’s been cared for, etc.

Weight and warmth go hand-in-hand! The more fill we add to a duvet, the warmer and puffier it becomes. Our fluffiest, warmest option is Winter Weight, however it’s way too warm for most people, and it’s recommended only if your room temperature is 15C or below. Most people will opt for All Season Weight for winter, as it’s recommended for 16-18C. If you keep your home fairly warm in the winter, you may want to go with a lighter weight.

I have ordered two 850 loft hutterite goose down duvet, I wonder if it can be washed by hand ?

Jane Lin

Hi Jane,

Thank you so much for your order! Down duvets should be dry cleaned, or washed by a professional cleaner if needed. Duvets that are used with a duvet cover in a relatively clean environment shouldn't need frequent cleaning - maybe every 5 years or so. Check with your local cleaner that they have experience with down and feather products (most do!)

Down and feather are quite sensitive to moisture. If any moisture is left in the product after washing, mold, mildew and other bacteria can develop. It is difficult to get duvets thoroughly dry in home machines. Also, home machines are quite small, which can cause unnecessary wear and tear on the product. Of course, washing by hand would certainly eliminate that issue.

If you decide to wash at home, we're happy to provide some recommendations for best results, however please note that your warranty will be rendered invalid. Use a mild detergent and wash on a gentle cycle (or by hand). Do not use a machine with an agitator, and try to find the largest machine possible. Dry on a low heat setting over several cycles. Even when you think it's dry, dry it a couple more times!

Looking for a warm winter duvet

Fernanda

Hi Fernanda, You can see which duvets come in which warmth ratings on the Product Comparison Chart! The duvets that come in Winter Weight are the 650 Loft White Goose Down Duvet and the White Goose Down Duvet. Winter Weight is far too warm for most people – it’s best for room temperatures of 15 degrees C or lower. All Season Weight is plenty warm for most people who are a bit chilly when they sleep or for room temps around 16 – 18 degrees.

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Hi
could you please tell me the difference between all season weight and medium weight in terms of heaviness. I would like a duvet that is
cool in the summer but decent warmth but not hot in the winter- I live in central Ontario.
i do not like heavy blankets or duvets( small person ).

Thanks ___ I look forward to your reply. Laurie

Laurie Mathe

Hi Laurie,

All Season Weight is always heavier than Regular Weight because it is warmer. To make a duvet warmer, we need to add more fill to it! You can compare the exact fill weights on the ‘Dimensions & Fill Weights' section on any product page. If you like a lightweight duvet, I would go with a down duvet. Down duvets are very light because down is so warm per ounce…just a little bit of fill goes a long way!

It's not really possible for a duvet to be both cool and warm, or to change its insulating properties by season. Regular Weight is moderately warm, and best for room temps of about 19-21C. All Season Weight is best for 16-18C. If your room temperature varies by season, we recommend catering to the warmer temperature and choosing the lighter of the weights. You can always add an extra blanket in the colder months, but it's very difficult to use a duvet that's too hot!

Do you make 850+ Hutterite white goose down duvet in summer weight? Can I special one?

Doris Cheng

Hi Doris, Thanks for your question! We don’t offer our Hutterite duvets in Summer Weight, but we can make one custom for you if you’d like. Please email us and we can provide a quote!

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Hi,
I have tried a duvet with polyester fill (not yours) and found it to be too heavy. I’m not concerned with weight as it relates to warmth, but rather how it feels on my body. I do not want something that feels confining; in fact I’d be nice if I didn’t feel it at all. Also, I am on a tight budget. So what would be your suggestions? Thank you.

Barb

Hi Barb, Thank you for your comment! Down alternative duvets tend to be fairly heavy. This is because synthetic materials don’t have very good insulating properties. A lot of fill is required in order to provide the warmth most people are looking for. For a lightweight duvet, you’ll want to go with a down duvet. Down is an excellent insulator, so just a little bit of fill goes a long way! For our most affordable down duvet, see the White Down Duvet in the pink flamingo packaging!

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Amanda, my daughter received her white goose down comforter just in time for the Calgary freeze. She absolutely loves it! And didn’t want to get out of bed the next morning. Thank you for your assistance and making a great Canadian Product!

Jim

Do you sell partner or split tog duvets? They are king size but allow 2 different fills ie summer weight one side and regular weight on the other for couples with different sleep needs?

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

We don't make custom duvets at this time, but thank you for the inquiry! We do log and track all new product requests, so this has been added to the list!

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Using your Smart ’furnace controls, one could lower temperature at night, hence save on heat bill and use a heavy duvet for comfort.

Marlene

The flat top of my bed is 60″ × 80.″ I’m interested in a Hutterite Regular duvet for myself and single Regular duvets for my three pre-teen granddaughters. What do you suggest and what are the costs? Can you have then delivered to my farm in East Garafraxa Township before Christmas?

Charles Hooker

Hi Charles, Sounds like you have a Queen size mattress! Most people with Queen mattress purchase Queen size duvets. However, check our Standard Dimensions page to see the dimensions of our duvets. Depending on how much overhang you desire, you may prefer an XL Queen or even a King duvet!

In terms of selecting a Hutterite duvet, it really depends on personal preference. Our most popular is the 850 Loft Hutterite Goose Down Duvet, however, you generally don't need to buy the top of the line to achieve the comfort and performance you're looking for. The 800 Loft Hutterite White Down Duvet is very luxurious as well, and virtually indistinguishable from the 850 Loft. Because it's made with duck down, it's a much nicer price for very similar quality! The Hutterite White Down and Hutterite Goose Down duvets are also excellent quality. They're lower loft and thread count than the 850 and 800 loft duvets, but they're still very luxurious to begin with, and I doubt you'd be disappointed with them! Take a look at our Product Comparison Chart to compare the specs of all 4 options before deciding.

The cost of any product can be found on the product page. Shipping is free across North America, so it's just the product price and sales tax to consider.

Finally, check our Shipping Information page for our holiday order cut-off date. It's typically mid-December, so if you're ordering in early November, you'll receive them in plenty of time!

Canadian Down & Feather Company

I would like all seasons king size most popular down feather , do you have couple to look at?

Joan McCallum

Hi Joan, Just to clarify, down and feather are two different materials!

Our best-sellers change over time, with trends. Some years, customers gravitate toward the top quality, like the 850 Loft Hutterite Goose Down Duvet. Other times, consumers are looking for the best value, like the 625 Loft White Down Duvet. A good indicator is to check the number of reviews on a product. That's the best sign of how many people are purchasing!

That being said, I wouldn't buy a duvet simply because many others buy it. Everyone has different needs, preferences, and expectations. We recommend reaching out to our Customer Service team with some information about what you're looking for (warmth, weight, overall feel, budget) and we can help match you with a good fit.

Canadian Down & Feather Company

Hi there,

I cant decide between a light weight duvet, medium weight or All seasons. I don’t want it too heavy or hot. I’d like one that is full and fluffy as some other brands ive seen are lightweight but also very thin and I like the fullness of my bedding. I guess that’s the trade off. Any suggestions?

Jen

Hi Jen, Great question.

Let's start with warmth level. If you don't want something too hot, I imagine you'll prefer Summer or Regular Weight. Summer Weight is best for room temperatures of 22C + or hot sleepers. Regular Weight is moderately warm, for room temps of 19-21C. I would not recommend All Season Weight, as it is fairly warm, and best suited for 16-18C or cold sleepers.

As for weight, there's no need to worry. As long as you purchase a down duvet, it won't be heavy. Down is an excellent insulator. Because it is such a high performance material, it doesn't take much fill to achieve the desired warmth level, and therefore down duvets are quite light. The higher the loft, the better the insulating properties and the lighter the duvet will be (but again, even the lowest loft down duvet will be relatively light).

Now the tougher part - fluffiness. Fluffiness and warmth go hand-in-hand. The more fill we add to a duvet, the fluffier and warmer it becomes! A fluffy down duvet is likely to be too hot for you. Summer Weight duvets are fairly thin. Regular Weight duvets have some moderate fluff, but not a ton. When in doubt, we recommend choosing the warmth level that suits you best. If you're splurging on a high quality duvet, you need to be able to use it! If appearance is more important to you than function, then you can consider a heavier weight.
